07/29/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Bubba Gump looked like a puppy in his kennel and he was so cute…I had to take him out. What a good walker! I like that he looks periodically at me as if to ask for approval. His tail wags and a smile appears on his face. I reward him with a treat. He might be skinny but he is quite polite taking the duck jerkies. He is interested in the birds but does not chase them. Dogs are met quite up close and Bubba is cool with them. Even when barked at pretty furiously, Bubba Gump looks at his peer, wags his tail and walks away. Free in a pen, Bubba Gump explores a little but stays mostly by my side. He enjoys petting and has such a beautiful smile that rewards me for the time spent together. Bubba Gump hops on the bench and settles for more cuddles and treats next to me. He is in dear need of TLC and will be thankful forever to the one who will open his/her heart and home to him. Come and meet lovely Bubba Gump at the Manhattan Care Center and make him yours. Another volunteer writes: My LOL moment came when walking BG past a mirrored doorway and he stopped, looked at his reflection, wagged his tail and watched the dog looking back at him move in unison with him. I wonder if he thought he had just made a new friend? BG is a fabulous dog, friendly, gentle, easy on leash, seems housetrained, and loved watching the kids in the park play ball. I sat on a stoop with him for a while as I chatted with someone, and he lay down next to me, burying his head in my lap, happy to hang out and cuddle. Yes, I swooned. BG is soft and polite with males and females in group play.
07/25/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Bubba Gump A1119324 KNOWN HISTORY: None 07/22/17 Intact male, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 07/24/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog is active and focused on the Assessor and all other stimuli available. His body is soft, likely panting, likely to display high movement between attempts. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Squeeze 2: 4. Dog lip curls Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog may smell and/or lick, then turns away. Summary: Bubba Gump was a bit anxious and distracted throughout his assessment; attempted to mount the assessor on multiple occasions. He tolerated most handling though became uncomfortable upon paw squeeze displaying all appropriate warning signals. Bubba Gump may benefit from a period of decompression in a new home environment. PLAYGROUP: Bubba Gump has appeared polite and tolerant when interacting with male and female dogs. He has at times attempted to mount dogs, but has been begun to display interest in other social behaviors. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Bubba Gump and respectful dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 07/22/17 Upon intake, Bubba Gump was a bit tense and growled though warmed up. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 07/22/17 During his initial medical examination, Bubba Gump was loose and friendly though became uncomfortable with some handling and began to growl/thrash; once over, Bubba Gump warmed up again and became loose/friendly. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Bubba Gump so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience adult-only home (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No children (under 13): Due to the noted handling sensitivities, we believe Bubba Gump may be best set up to succeed in an adult-only home where he can be provided a period of decompression before exposure to new and unfamiliar situations. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Bubba Gump has become stiff and lip curled when his paw were handled, showing an uncomfortability with touch in certain areas. It is important to avoid touching Bubba Gump’s paws at this time and being cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Bubba Gump to be more comfortable with this _X_Fearful: Though observed to be human-social, Bubba Gump may need time to warm up to the handler as he initially presents as a fearful dog, avoiding contact, shying away from direct touch. We recommend allowing Bubba Gump to interact at his own pace, force-free, rewarding based training is advised when introducing him to new/unfamiliar situations. _X_Anxiety: Bubba Gump has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) continually through the SAFER and through play sessions outside. This behavior was not reported at intake, and we have no known history on Bubba Gump, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment.
