Andy isn’t bothered when someone tries to touch her food bowl or when she they’re giving her a bath. When an unfamiliar individual comes into the phone she barks at first but will later become uninterested. Andy was described as affectionate, shy and mellow with a medium activity level. She loves head scratches and chews on balls. She is feed Dry food with table food once a day. Andy is mostly house-trained and goes on grass or cement, but will have accidents a few times a week. She has been crate trained and knows commands sit and at ease, and stop. Upon intake Andy was tense and had her tail between her legs she sat for a photo and the counselor was able to collar her with no issue.

05/23/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full profile Date of intake: 5/13/17 Spayed female, owner surrender (in previous home since 6 months of age) Previously lived with: Adults, a miniature Pinscher Behavior toward strangers: Initially shy and tense Behavior toward children: Fearful: children have thrown rocks at Andy so she has negative associations with them and will growl and bark when children approach Behavior toward dogs: Relaxed and affectionate with housemate, though Andy recently bit the Pinscher, leaving punctures Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: Yes, Andy bit her housemate dog. Andy and the other dog were crated together and the owner entered the room to discover Andy holding the small dog by her neck. She released when spoken to. The small dog had deep punctures to the neck, eyes, and face, and was rushed to the emergency room. No bites to humans reported Housetrained: Has accidents a few times a week Energy level/descriptors: Andy is described as affectionate, shy, and mellow, with a medium activity level Other notes: Andy is crate trained (length of time unknown) SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/23/17 Look:2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity:1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag:1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1& 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy:1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Summary: Andy was friendly and calm towards the assessor.

PLAYGROUP: According to Andy’s previous guardian, Andy has lived with one other female 14 year old mini Pincher and is usually relaxed and affectionate, and both dogs normally sleep together. Andy has bitten the Mini pincher recently has left several wounds on the dog but released the immediately when told. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Andy displays soft body language when greeting calm male and female dogs. She sniffs them briefly before keeping to herself as she explores. Due to Andy’s recent incident with a smaller dog, the Behavior Department recommends that Andy be placed with larger dogs that match her calm sociability. All introductions should be conducted slowly and be under supervision. Andy should never be crated with another dog. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Date of Initial : 5/14/17 During her medical examination, Andy allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Andy’s previous owner describes a medium activity level. Andy will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No small dogs/Recommend no dog parks: Due to Andy’s previous incident with a small dog in the home we recommend that Andy not be taken to dog parks or placed with small dogs. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: While social and interactive with her human caretakers, due to Andy’s bite history and concerns about his behavior around other dogs, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner at this time. Potential challenges: _X_House soiling: Andy is reported to be partially housetrained but to have accidents at times. He will need guidance and consistency to learn to eliminate outside solely. We recommend crate training (the crate must be made positive and never used as a punishment), frequent walks, rewards for eliminating outside (treats, toys, games), consistent feeding schedule, and careful monitoring when inside. Accidents should never be punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse.
