She slowly walked out the dog carrier and allowed being petted. She sniffed counselor hand and allowed to be collard, scanned and photographed.
07/07/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Sweet Andromeda has a zest for life that is immediately obvious– she loves puddle-jumping, chasing balls, and exploring her surroundings to no end. She can sit for treats, likes to play, is great at walking on a leash without pulling, and seems to be housetrained. On our walk today, I very coincidentally discovered that Andromeda LOVES water– after a surprise downpour, Andromeda walked through a puddle and immediately realized there was absolutely nothing more fun than running and jumping into every single puddle we passed. I can’t imagine what she’d do with a pond or a pool! Although Andromeda loves to play, she can get a little overexcited when playing sometimes and needs a minute or two to cool down– she also prefers a gentle touch, and may take time to warm up to new people petting her (although she’s totally fine being leashed, walking, and playing!). Andromeda would be very happy in a home with an experienced and active dog owner who can give her the love, exercise, and comfort she needs. Come and meet her at the Brooklyn ACC today!
07/01/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 6/29/17 Unaltered Female, Stray Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 7/1/17 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is a bit fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity:1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 3. Dog becomes easily aroused growls and attempts to bite the leash but quickly de-escalates once the game ends. Squeeze 1& 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1.. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Summary: Andromeda was friendly and social towards the assessor. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Andromeda engages in short burst of bouncy, running chase play in a group of male and female dogs. She does become overwhelmed when the arousal level increases and will grumble and jump on other dogs. She responds well to being interrupted and takes a break to bring her arousal level down. Andromeda was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dog is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Andromeda be placed with well-socialized resident dogs that match her gentle play style. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 6/29/17: Unknown MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/30/17: During her medical examination, Andromeda was nervous and curious but becomes relaxed when approached slowly. ENERGY LEVEL: Andromeda may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when she becomes overstimulated. She will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help her to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Andromeda is at this time, a home without children may be most beneficial at this time. _x_ No dog parks: Due to Andromeda’s tendency to become over aroused in a group of playful dogs, the Behavior Department recommends that Andromeda only be socialized in a more controlled setting. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
