Toy:: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell or lick, then turns away.
Summary:: Andre warmed up to the handler significantly, jumping up affectionately, leaning in- but did not warm up to the assessor at any time while in the room. Out of concern for his stress levels, we feel Andre is not a great candidate for the up close handling portion of the assessment at this time.Please see owner surrender profile notes for a full summary of his behavior in his previous home. Andre showed minimal interest in Toy, gently placing in mouth but losing focus, more interested in attention from handler. This may be due to environment as owner reports Andre enjoys balls and ropes, as well as playing chase and tug.

Summary:: During medical, Andre was tense, tail tucked, eyes wide, flinched when touched.
ENERGY LEVEL:: His owner describes Andre as having a high level of energy. In the care center, Andre is displaying low energy, timid and cautious- this is most likely due to the highly stressful environment.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Andre has displayed distance increasing behaviors while in his kennel (growling, whale eyeing, lip licking) but has warmed up to select handlers with a slow approach. Andre has warmed up to select handlers significantly, jumping up affectionately and leaning in.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: Andre has not been socialized and will need a very slow introduction to new and novel people and stimuli. Once comfortable with one person, he is affectionate and solicits attention, but will become wary of quick movement from others. We recommend a calm, quiet, structured, routine environment to help Andre acclimate and know what to expect. We feel children may be intimidating to Andre at this time and may do best in a quiet, adult only household that can respect his need for space.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Andre’s owner reports he may growl occasionally at strangers. Andre would do best with a slow introduction, he should never be forced to submit to petting or handling when he is showing signs of being uncomfortable. Andre should be spoken to in a soft, gentle voice. It is important to make sure Andre remains under threshold so his warning growl does not escalate to a bite.
