09/06/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: While dogs may not be able to communicate verbally in a language we understand, their body language and demeanor speaks volumes when we pay attention. Analese was ‘talking’ to me loud and clear. Happy to be out for a walk she used the ‘facilities’ as soon as we were out the door, and wagged her tail during our entire time together. We took a short walk as her back leg seems to be bothering her, stopping to take some pictures and cuddle in a doorway. Analese comes into my lap for cuddles but never quite relaxes – she’s on alert, looking around, checking out passersby on foot and on scooters. Ignoring a small yapping dog passing us, she barks at a larger dog, all the while partially on my lap wagging her tail. She’s far too thin in my opinion but nevertheless takes treats super gently with the very edge of her teeth. I never get a smile from her, but I do get a kiss, and when I tether her to sit down and take some notes she cuddles in close. Barking at someone who stopped to talk to me, Analese may be protecting me (and herself) from the unknown. She has a regal bearing, but like many in high places has fallen on hard times. She needs a nail trim, lots of nutritious food to help her gain some weight, and a safe and soft environment in which to learn to trust again. She’s clearly a dog who wants to love and be loved again and is looking for the person who will let her learn on her own timetable. Does that describe you?
09/04/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Analese came to the care center as a stray so her behavior in a home is unknown. She was found by police, hiding under bushes, barking and growling at people who passed her. Upon intake, she was growling and crouching with a low body, but did allow for petting. During Look, her body tense, her tail was high and wagging, ears were back. She lip licked during Sensitivity, tail high and wagging, bit tense. She followed during Tag, body tense and cautious. During Squeeze her body was tense and she did not pull back her paw on either Squeeze attempt. She displayed minimal interest in the Toy, sniffing it. After the assessment, she approached the assessor as if to solicit attention and began growling. Analese should be placed with a New Hope partner who can provide an experienced foster home that can work on her behavior. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introduction/exposure to new and unfamiliar situations; a decompression period is recommended to aide in helping Analese acclimate to a new home environment. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff, tail is high and wagging stiffly. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 3. Dog stands tall and square. Her tail perpendicular to spine, wagging stiffly. Tag: 3. Dog responds with stiff body, follows. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Body is stiff Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog sniffs toy. Playgroup: Analese arrived into our care as a stray, so there is no available history of previous interaction with other dog. When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Analese enters the pen with a tense body and high, flagging tail. She places her chin over the male greeter dog’s shoulder and begins to growl. She does this each time the greeter re-approaches. The behavior team feels that Analese would be most comfortable as the only resident dog in a new home, before following up on her behavior around them outside the care center environment.
