04/18/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Puppy, puppy, puppy! Absolute brindlicious, little Miss Amber Rose is gorgeous, snuggly, playful, fun and never stops wagging her tail. She’s everything a puppy should be and well on her way to being a rockstar adult dog. All she needs, as all puppies do, is love, structure, guidance, exercise and more love. Such an easy give to this adorable little girl! Sweet and friendly with a great smile, a playful and can-do spirit, she’s all about making friends with everyone. Amber Rose loves treats which will help in her training with positive reinforcement. Off leash in a pen, she was snuggly in my lap for hugs and kisses, and then ran over to investigate the small dog entering the adjoining pen. Small dog growled, snarled and barked, and Amber Rose wagged her tail in confusion as to why this little dog was carrying on so, when all she seemed to want to do was play. Honestly, if she could talk she would be saying, in her best NYC accent, “Yo, you barking at me?” In group play, she’s bouncy with both males and females, sometimes not recognizing if another dog doesn’t want to play. Amber Rose is a baby, she’s got a lot to learn. Puppies aren’t for everyone, but if you’re a puppy person who loves that puppy energy and loves to help rockstar puppies become rockstar adults, Amber Rose is hoping you’ll stop by to meet her today!
04/16/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 4/14/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 4/16/17 Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps on assessor, mouths with light pressure. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places her open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Amber Rose displayed a high amount of activity on her assessment. She jumped up at times in a playful manner. She was social throughout and allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Hyper-motivated: These dogs come on too strong and have coarse social skills. They have had a poor history of social experience with other dogs and were most likely deprived of off- leash contact. They are overly excited when meeting new dogs, often up in the other dog’s face and not able to read subtle signals to back of. PLAYGROUP: 4/16: When introduced off leash to dogs in the care center, Amber Rose plays exuberantly and often mounts during play. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/14/17 During her initial medical exam, Amber Rose was social and allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Amber Rose so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
_X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Amber Rose has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Amber Rose’s teeth make contact with skin).
04/16/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Amber Rose is exuberant at play with other dogs in the care center. Amber Rose frequently mounts dogs while engaging, and at times may continue to solicit play from dogs who are not interested. The behavior department feels that Amber Rose may be most compatible with other playful dogs, or dogs who may be tolerant of the behaviors previously described. 4/16: When introduced off leash to dogs in the care center, Amber Rose plays exuberantly and often mounts during play. 4/17-19: Amber Rose plays exuberantly with male and female dogs. She continues to mount during play. At times, she continues to solicit from dogs who are not comfortable with play.
