09/03/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Aston reminds me of a young actor full of promises. He is very good looking, trim, long legged, an elegant walker, bouncy at times and so well dressed in his perfect chocolate coat. He is friendly, sociable and welcoming, making him a very pleasant pooch to be around. Aston is leashed easily and strolls nicely around the block. His kennel is clean and orderly. He does his business on the way without marking his territory. He seems glad to see his peers and he certainly enjoys his time in playgroup, responding nicely to limits set by others. I very much enjoyed looking at him cavorting with a young female in a pen. Aston can sit on command, takes treats nicely from my hand and does not mind at all posing for pictures even in the blinding sun…His tail wags non stop and his body wiggles… He is really a cute and pleasurable dog to be with. He gave me the hint that he can and wants to play ball but there is right now no yard to test Aston playful skills. I know, though that he has it in him to have fun. Aston is a great boy, lively but collected too, friendly and loving(he is an excellent lap dog). Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center. He would be so glad to be your friend…for ever.
08/31/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Aston came to the care center as a stray so his behavior in a home in unknown. Upon intake, he allowed all handling. On his relief he walked well. In the assessment room he appeared social and friendly. He pulled out of the assessor’s hands three times during Look, body soft and wiggly. During Sensitivity, he leaned in, body soft and tail wagging. He grabbed the leash during Tag, playful, and held on to the leash tugging on it. He did not pull back his paw on either Squeeze attempt and he licked the assessor’s hand. He kept a firm grip on the Toy, body loose and wiggly. When off leash with other dogs, Aston offers a few play bows to the greeter. When not reciprocated, he tries to mount. He briefly backs up when offered correction from the other dog. The Behavior Team recommends that Aston be placed in an Experienced home as he has displayed a high level of excitability and arousal, taking a few minutes to recover. He would benefit from positive reinforcement training to teach him basic manners as well as daily physical exercise, such as walks and runs, mental stimulation, such as kongs and puzzle toys. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Body is soft and wiggly Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy.
