08/27/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Are you ready to snuggle with a big grey meatball? Come meet Alpo!! All tail waggy and up front in his kennel with a clear message of ‘hey, it’s me, let’s meet and go out”! With that ear to ear grin the pitties are known for, he’s all snuggle and fun with a tail that never stops wagging. He has the cutest wiggle when he walks and I found myself circling the block just to keep watching him walk! Likely housetrained Alpo used the ‘facilities’ as soon as we were out the door, flashed his award winning smile and off we go. Alpo has an odd habit of liking to climb on the garbage bags piled up on the sidewalk waiting for pickup and didn’t miss a one. Funny boy! Pulling on the leash from time to time, he pulls a bit towards other dogs that pass but is very responsive to handler direction. Completely ignoring a squirrel who literally walked a foot in front of us Alpo and I settle on a park bench where he promptly drapes himself over my lap and gives me kisses. Fun, friendly, affectionate and sweet, Alpo is all big personality hoping to meet his soul mate today. A staff member writes: As soon as I sat down on the park bench, Alpo planted his front paws on my lap. As we kissed and cuddled, passerby couldn’t help but comment, “What a sweet and good-looking dog!” When we got back to the care center, we hung out on a bench in front of the building. Alpo immediately made friends in his usual endearing way with the volunteer beside me, and the staff member who came by. He was like a politician greeting his constituents. A passerby was so taken by his cute behavior and chiseled, magazine-cover face that she started taking photos. In the time I spent with Alpo, I realized that his handsome face and friendly personality attracts admirers, and I felt popular by association.
08/22/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Alpo came to the care center as a stray so his behavior in a home is unknown. Upon intake, he appeared to be friendly. For his relief walk, Alpo pulled hard on leash. In the assessment room, he appeared friendly and displayed a high amount of energy, a bit anxious. Alpo pulled his head out of the assessor’s hands three times during Look. He leaned into assessor during Sensitivity, body loose, tail wagging, mouth open, mouthing the assessor. Alpo became excited during Tag, jumping on assessor. He jumps on and mouths assessor between items. He does places his mouth on the assessor’s hand on both Squeeze attempts. He kept a firm grip on the Toy, body loose and wiggly. On leash with another dog at the care center, Alpo approached quickly, tail high and wagging, body a bit stiff. The Behavior Team recommends Alpo be placed with an Experienced adopter with no young children. He will need an in depth interaction with any older children in the home as we have no history of him with children. Alpo will benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play, as well as durable toys such as kongs and nylabones to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. Force-free, reward based training is advised. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 3. Dog immediately jumps high and hard on Assessor and hard mouths. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog may smell or lick toy, then turn away. Dog-dog: On leash with another dog at the care center, Alpo approached quickly, tail high and wagging, body a bit stiff.
08/23/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Alpo displays intensely sexually motivated behavior. He rushes up and attempts to mount the female greeter, and does not cease when she offers correction. It should be taken into consideration that at this time, Alpo is still unaltered. Alpo’s leash is picked up and he is walked out of the pen. The behavior team feels that Alpo hould be allowed time to acclimate to life outside the shelter environment as the only resident dog, before following up on his behavior around them. He arrived into our care as a stray, so there is no available history of previous interaction with other dogs.
