04/11/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Almay is a big, beautiful, bouncy boy with a smile that just won’t quit, the kind of happily handsome dog who literally stops people in their tracks as they stare in admiration. When I walked past his kennel and he got up on his hind legs to beg for a date, there was no saying no–I just had to meet this fun-loving hunk for myself! He’s as friendly as can be with people and really wonderful with fellow dogs in play group too; bounding like a puppy alongside them, play bowing and jumping about as he encourages everyone to join in the game. On leash Almay is strong but walks well and off leash he’s all about play play play, though he doesn’t seem to realize his own size and will leap up with cheerful abandon as he grabs for a treat, a ball or just to give his human a hefty hug. While it’s nice to be loved on, at 74 pounds Almay could easily overwhelm the object of his affection and will need some training (he’s very smart!) to bring this natural jumpiness down a notch or two. Toys and treats are much appreciated and never guarded and he’s happy to let me pet his soft fur and massage those smushable cheeks as much as I please. Almay is a handful for sure but he could be a wonderful pet and playmate for the right active, experienced family, especially one that includes some four-legged siblings. A good-hearted boy who lives by the idea that there’s always room for more fun, laughter and love in his life, Almay is waiting and wondering if…just maybe…you feel the same way too?
04/11/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Almay came into our center after being found in an abandoned building by police. She was attention seeking and friendly upon intake. Almay pulled on leash for her relief walk. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands during Look item, body soft. Almay stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, tail wagging. She was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, jumped up on assessor at end of game, but lightly despite her size. She pulled her paw back on both Squeeze attempts, mouthed assessor’s hand with light pressure after second paw Squeeze. Almay jumped up on handler during positioning for Toy item. Once positioned, she playfully engaged with Toy, keeping a firm grip with loose, wiggly body. Almay required a trade up in order to relinquish Toy at end of item. Almay is high-strung and anxious in the yard as well as during his interaction. He does greet well and have a few spurts of running with the helper dog, but he is mostly distracted and difficult to focus. The Behavior Team feels Almay would do well with an Experienced adopter. He will benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, and play to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. Almay may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners and focus as well as the command ‘drop it’ and trade up games. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is wagging, mouth closed, ears back Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, jumps up lightly on assessor at end of game Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog pulls back, mouths assessor’s hand at end of item with light pressure Toy 1: 2. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy, requires trade up to relinquish Dog-dog: Almay is high-strung and anxious in the yard as well as during his interaction. He does greet well and have a few spurts of running with the helper dog, but he is mostly distracted and difficult to focus.
04/09/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Almay solicits bouts of exuberant, running play but quickly becomes anxious while in the yard. He has not yet been introduced to a male dog while in our care. The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction to ensure compatability between Almay and any resident dogs. He may do best placed with an energetic, playful dog. Due to the fact that Almay arrived as a stray, prior history around dogs is unknown. Almay is high-strung and anxious in the yard as well as during his interaction. He does greet well and have a few spurts of running with the helper dog, but he is mostly distracted and difficult to focus. 4/12 update: Almay continues to display anxious behavior in the yard. He solicits exuberant play but becomes overwhelming to his playmates.
