02/17/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: “Hey now. You’re an all-star.” Well *you* may not be, but you can certainly be all-star adjacent with one very special and bunny-eared cutie. At 2 years-old and 60 pounds, this cow-colored cutie would definitely be the MVP of any game he played. All Star gives it his absolute “all”, be it walking excitedly to the park, jumping up for more and more (and more) kisses, or giving me his cutest, Westminster caliber, puppy dog eyes for the pleasure of one more treat. All Star is happiest when free in a pen, his person by his side, with a butt rub thrown in for extra measure. While still a bit anxious in his new, uncertain environment, our little star is clearly just waiting in the wings to shine. He is the perfect combo of handsome and cute with his sleek, ebony coat and silly ears on top, and with the right amount of activity and love our boy is sure to be your biggest trophy. All Star may be the obvious Best In Show, but his only real want is to be the champion of your heart. “Only shooting stars break the mold” so come meet one today. All Star is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
02/17/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY:None 2/13/17 Unaltered male, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: Date of assessment 2/17/2017 Look: 2. Dog shoulder rubs, slight whine, jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog sits and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture, mouth closed Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, body soft. Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog pulls back paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog sniffs, then turns away. Summary: All Star was mainly focused on exit throughout assessment, but allowed all handling. At times would whine, displacement scratch, but body remained neutral. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Conflict Driven: These dogs are out to have a good time at another’s expense. They tend to target a dog that is giving very clear signals to back off and do not. This behavior is very distressing for the target dogs and should not be allowed to happen. PLAYGROUP: 2/16: All Star is reactive on-leash when greeting the female greeter dog. He hard barks, growls, and lunges in her direction. A muzzle is applied before allowing him to interact off leash. All Star rushes into the pen, body tense. He follows and repeatedly attempts to mount the greeter dog. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/13/17 During his initial medical exam All Star was tense, growling and snapped. However, two days later during his veterinary examination, All Star was notably more social, allowing all handling. ENERGY LEVEL:
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Single-pet home (Due to concerning behaviors seen in the care center, the behavior department recommends not placing All Star into a home with other dogs until his behaviors can be followed up on once he is given time to decompress in a home.) _X_Recommend no dog parks (see GroupBehavior entry for more detailed information) _X_Place with a New Hope partner (While fairly social with his human caretakers once he has some time to warm up, All Star’s behavior toward other dogs when brought into the play yard indicates to us that he will need intervention and further investigation in order to address this behavior. In the meantime, safety tools should be utilized to keep All Star and those around him safe. We recommend only force-free, reward based training for All Star as more aversive methods are likely to increase fear and anxiety.) Potential challenges: _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration (All Star shows concerning behaviors when near dogs both on-leash and through a barrier. He will stiffen, growl, bark and snap without being able to be distracted. We recommend exercising caution when walking All Star in areas where he may interact with other dogs.)
02/16/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
2/16: All Star is reactive on-leash when greeting the female greeter dog. He hard barks, growls, and lunges in her direction. A muzzle is applied before allowing him to interact off leash. All Star rushes into the pen, body tense. He follows and repeatedly attempts to mount the greeter dog. Due to him arriving to the care center as a stray and no previous information being known about him, the behavior department recommends not placing All Star into a home with other dogs until his behaviors in a stable environment can be followed up on.
