A volunteer writes: A gorgeous little girl with fabulous rabbit ears, soft expressive eyes and a gently wagging tail is beckoning me to her kennel. I’m in! Let’s go! Alex is easily leashed and we head out the door, Alex’s first priority is going potty, and then we’re off to the park. Her leash manners are lovely, her tail wags as we walk and after a short walk we head into the yard for some off leash time. Showing off her sit for a treat, Alex is so gentle, sweet and calm that I’d happily spend the day with her just cuddling. She comes when I call her with kissy sounds, drapes herself in my lap for some cuddling all the while gently waving her tail. Alex was the perfect end to my day, an oasis of calm, sweet and easy in an otherwise hectic day. Clearly having been a mom several times, Alex is ready to be the pampered and cherished companion she is meant to be. Will you be the lucky one to make her yours and love her as she deserves to be?
07/16/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 7/14/17 Unaltered Female, Stray Other notes: When Alexandria was found by the police, she was eating and growled at them when they approached. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 7/16/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: PLAYGROUP: Alexandria has not been comfortable during introductions with dogs in the care center. History around dogs is unknown due to arriving as a stray. At this time, a single dog residence is recommended for Alexandria. INTAKE BEHAVIOR MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/14/17 During her initial medical exam, Alexandria had a loose body and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Alexandria so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, she displays a medium level of activity. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the potential for resource guarding seen when Alexandria was approached by the police officers, we recommend a home without young children. _X_Single dog home/no dog parks: Alexandria has been uncomfortable during interaction with dogs, and may be most comfortable in a single dog residence. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: The police officers who found Alexandria reported that she growled when they approached her while she was eating, noting a potential for resource guarding. We recommend that Alexandria be left along while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Alexandria’s mouth, and any time something is removed she should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. She should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games.
07/15/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Alexandria has not been comfortable during introductions with dogs in the care center. History around dogs is unknown due to arriving as a stray. At this time, a single dog residence is recommended for Alexandria. 7/15: When greeting another dog through the gate, Alexandria is stiff, with hackles raised. For this reason she is muzzled. Once off leash with another dog, Alexandria is distracted by the muzzle but will stiffen when approached by the other dog. 7/18: Alexandria is introduced without a muzzle. She is a bit tense, and completely ignores the presence of the helper dog when they approach.
