04/23/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Albany is a shy little lady that was left tied to our fence. On our first walk together, she was very waggy and happily trotted at my side, but grew more wary the more she caught me admiring her. She will likely need time to really trust, but Albany is truly sweet! She walks nicely on leash, seems housebroken, sits for treats (and loves them…a ticket towards her heart!!) and has been interested in other dogs we’ve seen on walks. She is missing a back toe, her mouth does all sorts of cute things (like a Mona Lisa smile), and she has kind eyes. She likes toys and has briefly played fetch with me before a banner blowing in the wind startled her. She isn’t cuddly, but definitely seems to want to be: whenever I sit on a bench or ledge she’s quick to hop up at my side and she comes closer to me when I stop petting her. She is looking for a home to blossom in…please come meet her at Brooklyn ACC!
04/13/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 4/9/17 Unaltered Female, Stray Other notes: Upon intake Albany was stressed, limited handling conducted due to her behavior. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 4/9/17 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity:2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body a bit tense with her mouth closed. Tag:1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1:3. Dog closes mouth, becomes tense. Flank Squeeze 1&2: 2. Dog does not respond at all but a bit tense. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Albany was fearful though became a bit social towards the assessor with a slow approach; she allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Albany mostly keeps to herself in a group of calm male and female dogs. Albany was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Albany be placed with a resident dog that matches her calm sociability. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/10/17 During her medical examination, Albany was tense and allowed limited handling. ENERGY LEVEL: – We have no history on Albany so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Albany may be intimidated by young children. She needs a slow approach and time to warm up. She should never be forced to interact with new people, and should be allowed to greet and initiate an interaction at her own pace. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity _X_Fearful: Though observed to be human-social, Albany may need time to warm up to the handler as she initially presents as a fearful dog, avoiding contact, shying away from direct touch. We recommend allowing Albany to interact at her own pace, force-free, rewarding based training is advised when introducing her to new/unfamiliar situations.
04/11/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Albany mostly keeps to herself in a group of calm male and female dogs. Albany was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Albany be placed with a resident dog that matches her calm sociability. 4/11: Albany avoids greeting a novel male dog. His leash is held to give Albany the chance to approach on her own. When the male dog moves quickly towards her, Albany displays a lip curl (an appropriate canine body language warning) and chooses to walk away. She keeps to herself as she explores the pen. 4/12: In a group of calm male and female dogs, Albany displays soft body language and mostly keeps to herself. She is slightly social, leaning forward to greeting other dogs when they are facing away from her. dogs.
