Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/26/16 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body a bit tense with his mouth closed. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1:3. Dog closes mouth, becomes tense. Flank Squeeze 1&2:1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Al was fearful and uncomfortable during the assessment and needs a slow approach. PLAYGROUP: Al was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Al displays neutral body language when greeting male and female dogs. He may attempt to mount both male and female dogs, persisting after handler interruptions. The Behavior Department recommends that Al be placed in a home with dogs that match his calm energy level and that a dog-dog interacting be conducted prior to adoption to ensure compatibility. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/26/16 During his medical examination, Al growls, lip curls and allowed for minimal handling. IN SHELTER BEHAVIOR: 11/29/16 A staff member was drying Al after he participated in rainy Play Group session. When she was drying his neck and chest, he quickly turned his head and attempted to bite her hand; grabbing the towel instead. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience _X_No children (under 13)- Can be uncomfortable at times and needs a slow approach. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Al has been observed to display fearful behavior during his stay at our care centers; at times will avoid interaction and shy away from direct-touch. Al may easily startle and is made uncomfortable by loud noises and sudden movement and will display proper warning signals as well as increase distance from anything that may present a threat. We cannot be certain if any other behavior is suppressed as a result of his environment. A period of decompression is advised before introduction or exposure to new and unfamiliar situations. Force-free, reward based training is advised.)
