03/25/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: No mystery here. 6 year-old Agatha is the real deal. A soft and gentle sweetheart, a sad-eyed beauty in a caramel coat, with a long, elegant tail that’s forever busy wagging. On a recent snowy day, Agatha and I venture out for a walk. I’m immediately struck by her beautiful face. Her sweet, floppy ears, adorable button nose, and those eyes that seem to speak novels all at once. She does have some old scars across her muzzle. Flecks of pink, maybe years old, now healed-over and forgotten, possibly even by Agatha herself. To me they serve as a reminder to shower her with even more love. So I cradle her head, hug her butterscotch frame, and plant kisses on every pink speck I can find. Agatha arrived in our care along with her housemate when her owner could no longer provide them care. She is an easy walker, taking pleasure in the little things along the path, stopping to sniff every blade and each bloom, not wanting to miss a thing. She appears to be housebroken, tending to business straight away, and takes her treats gently from my hand, leaving her cold nose against my palm long after they’ve disappeared. At 6 years-old, whatever her past, Agatha has certainly had one. But if there are bad feelings to be had or hurt to harbor, Agatha’s not in the know. There’s no mystery to Agatha but she does have one secret. That’s the key to happiness. She holds that in her heart, and she’s waiting to give it to you. Agatha is in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC. Another volunteer writes: Lady Agatha…a sweetly scarred nose leads to eyes that shine with love, with hope, with trust. Wagging her tail as we take an early morning walk, she uses ‘the facilities’ right away, so may be housetrained, and snuggles in my lap for kisses when we sit down to enjoy some quiet time. Gentle and sweet, Lady Agatha shows off her sit for a treat which she takes gently, and we hang out like two old pals. Agatha has been enjoying her playgroup time, bouncy and playful, but can be a bit pushy with those that don’t want to play. She’s a lady whose history we’ll never know, but for whom we can promise a future full of love and security. She deserves it and will cherish it. Come meet her today.
03/19/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 3/16/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/19/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, closed mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Agatha displayed no concerning behaviors on her assessment. She was social and solicited attention throughout her assessment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Hyper-motivated: These dogs come on too strong and have coarse social skills. They have had a poor history of social experience with other dogs and were most likely deprived of off- leash contact. They are overly excited when meeting new dogs, often up in the other dog’s face and not able to read subtle signals to back off, which can quickly lead to a scuffle. PLAYGROUP: Agatha is vocal when greeting other dogs (often emitting a high pitched scream) and is tense during her interactions. She will engage in some play but will exhibit assertive behaviors by T’ing the other dogs shoulders, standing over them and attempting to mount. Though she arrived to the care center with a young, female dog, she was a stray so any in-home behaviors are unknown. The behavior department recommends not placing Agatha into a home with dogs at this time and recommends any future introductions be done on a one-on-one basis. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: During her initial medical exam, Agatha was social and allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Agatha so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, Agatha displays a medium level of activity. RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience) _X_Single-pet home: See GroupBehavior entry for more detailed information. _X_Recommend no dog parks: Any future introductions should be conducted at a one-on-one basis.
03/17/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Agatha is vocal when greeting other dogs (often emitting a high pitched scream) and is tense during her interactions. 3/17: When introduced off leash to male greeter dogs, Agatha begins to flag (is in heat), and solicits bouts of pushy play. 3/18: Agatha greets a female dog politely and engages in pushy play with her. She will jump on her back and repeatedly solicit play despite the other dog ignoring her. 3/19: Agatha jumps on a male dog repeatedly to solicit play, and continues even when the male dog does not engage. 3/21: Agatha engages in pushy play with female dogs. She targets a male dog who appears fearful, following him with a tense body and attempting to jump on him. 3/22: Agatha engages in some play but will flag for male dogs when the approach from behind. 3/23-26: Agatha engages in bouncy, running play. She will tense and target more fearful dogs–chasing them and then T’ing their shoulders when she gets close.
