08/13/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/13/16 13:54 Basic Information Afis is a large approximate 3 year old male American Pitt Bull who was found loose wandering the streets. Police were called and due to his size the police called ESU. ESU easily placed him in a large carrier. The police or ESU never physically touched Afis. He never showed any signs of aggression while under the care of the police. The laid down inside the carrier and slept during the car ride to our shelter. Behavior during Intake Afis was tolerant of touch. He sat on command for his photo and tolerated all other handling. Afis was somewhat rope aggressive but did respond to correction.
08/20/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: If stunning, brindleicious Afis could write a personal ad (if only he had a pen!) it might go something like this – “Me:Strong, silent type with a goofy, sweet side hiding just beneath the surface. Best feature: Eyes (have you seen them??). Favorite movie: 101 Dalmatians. Favorite song: Who let the dogs out. Favorite season: (Dog days of) Summer. Favorite item of clothing: My star-spangled bandana. Favorite holiday: July 4th (obvs). Favorite activities: Long walks on the beach (or the grass, the street, dirt, sidewalk, literally any type of long walk will do), eating salami snacks, playing with stuffy toys (squeaky variety preferred), getting never-ending butt rubs. Least favorite activities: Going without any of the previously mentioned, waiting for my forever family.” There may be a lot of fish in the sea but holy mackerel, does Afis have it all. Handsome, mellow, patient, playful, and did I mention EYES? Do the right thing and make the right swipe on Afis today before this brooding bachelor is officially off the market. Afis is ready and waiting for love at Manhattan’s ACC. Another volunteer writes: As I was walking out of the building with his gorgeousness someone said, ah, that’s our gentle giant. What a perfect description! Afis is a big boy but they don’t come better on leash than him. What a pleasure to stroll along with him. Stopping for a potty break as soon as we were out the door, his pace is then easy and leisurely, and two different people stopped to ask me about him as he’s that handsome and that gentle. One person was in his car and stopped me to talk about him! After a long, hot day Afis was the perfect end, and as I kissed his head when I put him back in his kennel I told him his person would find him. Can you make my promise come true?
08/16/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Afis pulls hard on the leash. He was not sociable, and was more interested in his surroundings than the handler during the assessment. Afis was hard to position; he was focused on objects in the room during handling. He was excitable body checking the assessor during the tag interaction grabbing at the leash and was a bit difficult to distract him. Afis took the toy with a soft body language. Afis is an active dog he need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experienced home where force-free based training can be provided to help Afis adjust more comfortably to his new environment. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog is not fearful. The dog is not focused in the surroundings than the handler. Tag: 3. Dog responds with his tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body stiff and body checks the Assessor. Dog is often focused on other stimuli in the room. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dog-to-dog: Afis arrived into our care as a stray, so there is no is no available history of previous interaction with other dogs. When introduced off-leash to another dog (female), Afis is tense-bodied upon greeting. He displays sexually motivated behavior, however it should be taken into consideration that Afis is unaltered. Afis does not reciprocate with play when solicited. The behavior team feels that Afis should be allowed time to acclimate to life outside the shelter environment as the only resident dog, before following up on his behavior around them.
