09/09/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: With such an old fashioned, although lovely name, Adele, I thought that I was going to spend time with an elderly dog who was extremely quiet and sleepy in her kennel. To my surprise, Adele, a chocolate and smoke colored Sharpei, was a relatively young gal, only three years of age. A shy and reserved pooch she is, in well known Sharpei fashion. Adele is quite thin, all her ribs are showing. Her coat, although of beautiful shades of grey and brown, is currently thin, and has an eye discharge. Her folds, though, are clean, and her little ears are just adorable. Adele walks very nicely on the leash and sniffs intensely all the way to the park and back. Other dogs are neared as well as pigeons and squirrels. Adele is not distracted. She avoids the eye of the camera, making the capture of a good picture basically impossible. A pity…because she is so very pretty. She does not really sit on command but accepts soft treats very politely. She does not mind at all me caressing her head and body. Adele seems to me just tired right now, and needs to regain strength and some weight while in our care. Sharpei lovers…come and meet Adele at the Manhattan Care Center. Offer her your home and your heart, and she will be your friend for life.
09/08/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Adele came to the care center as a stray so her behavior in a home is unknown. Upon intake she was tense but allowed touching. Medical noted that she allowed some handling if they went slow. On her relief walk, she walked nicely, and once in the SAFER assessment room she appeared aloof, sniffing around the room. When attempting to position Adele’s head for Look, she growled. The rest of the handling items were omitted. She displayed no interest in the Toy. The Behavior Team recommends that Adele be placed with a New Hope partner only where she can be given time to become comfortable in her new surroundings and her behavior can by worked with. Look: 5. Dog growls when her head is handled. Toy 1. No interest.
09/08/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
09/08/16: When itnroduced on-leash to a dog, Adele briefly sniffs in the general direction, then does not appear interested in further approach. She arrived into our care as a stray, so there is no available history of previous interaction with other dogs. The behavior team feels that Adele should be allowed time to acclimate to life outside the shelter environment as the only resident dog, before following up on her behavior around them.
