03/12/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 3/9/17 Unaltered Female, Stray Other notes: Upon intake when first approached Ackie had a loose body and was wagging her tail. When the counselor went to pet her few times on her back she then lunged at the counselor with no warning. The surrender had to collar and mussel Ackie. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/11/17 Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Ackie was fearful and attempted to be social but she was unsure with the handlers. She would attempted to approach with her body low, tail tucked but backs away and growl at one of the handlers. Out of concern for her stress levels and for safety concerns, we feel Ackie is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Ackie displays soft body language with male and female dogs. She chooses to keep to herself as she explores the pen and does not engage in play when solicited. According to Ackie’s previous guardian, Ackie has been socialized with other dogs and respectful when around them. The Behavior Department recommends that Ackie be placed in a home with resident dogs that match her calm energy level. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/9/17 During her medical examination, Ackie did not tolerate handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Ackie displays a low energy level during her stay in the care centers, we cannot be certain of how this may change in a home environment. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Ackie is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the warning and distance-increasing behaviors shown in the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide force free behavior modification. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods as more aversive techniques will likely increase fear and increase the risk of aggression. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Ackie has shown some escalated warning behaviors in the care center. It is important to make sure Ackie stays under threshold and is not pushed to escalate further to a bite.
