Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is tense and anxious; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. He was distracted throughout though tolerant of handling; Achilles, at times, sought handler attention briefly. He did display some concern when engaged with toy (growling when attempts were made to remove). PLAYGROUP: 9/17/17 Summary: According to his previous owner, Achilles has not spent time around other dogs. When introduced to a novel female dog through the gate, Achilles immediately becomes reactive and begins growling and lunging. They are not allowed to meet face to face. The Behavior Department recommend that Achilles be the only dog at this time. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/17/17 During the examination Achilles was initially friendly with his tail wagging. He began pulling on lead, jumping up, and growling upon palpation of tail wound. ENERGY LEVEL: Owner describes Achilles as friendly, and playful high energy. Achilles will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adult-only home (Suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience) _X_ No children (under 13): Achilles has been extremely anxious, and hesitant to interact during his time at the care center. We feel he will be most comfortable and most likely to thrive in an adult-only home. _X_ Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: Due to potential toy guarding behavior in the care center, Achilles gave an appropriate warning of his discomfort (growl). Behavior modification for food guarding behavior can be found at aspcapro.org. _X_ Anxiety: Achilles has shown high levels of anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) as well as high movement, unable to readily settle. This behavior was not reported at intake nor in his previous known history so it may likely be due to the shelter environment. We recommend a period of decompression before introducing or exposing Achilles to new and unfamiliar situations to best set him up for success. _X_On leash reactivity/barrier frustration
