05/13/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
05/13/17 18:54 Basic information: Ace is a roughly 9 month old Am Pit bull mix. The Owner got her from a shelter. The owner surrendered Ace because she moved to a place that does not allow dogs. Ace has never been taken to a vet. Socialization: Around strangers Ace is friendly playful. Ace has lived with a 13 year old child, he is relaxed and playful around children and adults he does not know. Ace has never been around other pets so the owner has no idea how Ace would behave around them. Ace has never bitten anyone. Behavior: The owner stats that Ace is not bothered when some moves his food or treats while he is eating, when someone takes his toys away or when someone disturbs him while sleeping. Ace likes to be brushed and given bathes but has never had his nails trimmed. When an unfamiliar person or animal approaches a family member or his home he approaches them in a friendly manor. The owner does not know how Ace is around loud noises such as storms or fireworks. For a new family to know: The owner describes Ace as friendly, affectionate and playful with a high activity level. His favorite activity is to play fetch with his owner. In the home Ace tends to follow the owner around the house and is kept mainly indoors. Ace sleeps in the floor of the bedroom on a blanket. Ace was fed Pedigree dry dog food three times a day. He is not fully house trained and does have accidents in the home (mostly when not walked), when outside he goes to the bathroom on or around trees and grass. Ace knows the command “sit “. For exercise Ace is used to brisk walks on the leash and twice a day and does not pull on the leash. Behavior during intake: Ace was relaxed with lose body. Ace allowed to a be scanned (-), collared, pictured and placed in a dog kennel.
05/16/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I don’t usually kiss on the first date, so I waited until my second date with Ace :). He’s a gorgeous big puppy, surrendered to our care as his person moved to a place where he wasn’t welcome. We’re told he lived with a 13 yo., is relaxed and playful with children and adults he doesn’t know, doesn’t guard his things, likes to be brushed and get baths, loves to play fetch, and is mostly housetrained when he is walked regularly (he went potty as soon as we were outside). His coat is soft and silky, and you’ll want to run your hands down his back, his teeth clean and white, and his eyes look like they’ve been professionally made up. Stunning. Showing off his sit, he gently takes treats, loved playing with toys and enjoyed good game of tug. I let him win, but don’t tell him! Ace comes when called, joined me on the bench for some kisses (our second date, remember?), and is sweetly playful and fun. It wasn’t intentional, but Ace was my last walk of my day, and it really was saving the best for last. You, lucky adopter, can have the best every day, so come meet our Ace today!
05/15/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile 5/13/2017 Unaltered male, owner surrender Previously lived with: 13 year old child Behavior toward strangers: Friendly and playful Behavior toward children: Relaxed and playful Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Partially, will have accidents in the home when not walked Energy level/descriptors: Friendly, affectionate, and playful with a high activity level Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/15/2017 Look: 1. Dog leans forward to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, ears back, tail neutral, soft and loose body, lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, becomes very playful, jumps up with moderate intensity but settles easily at end. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not pull back paw, licks assessor’s hand. Toy 1: 1. Dog playfully engages, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Ace displayed high energy and movement but was easily directed and manageable. He showed a low threshold for arousal as he escalated fairly quickly during the tag portion, jumping up onto assessor, though he recovered well. PLAYGROUP: Ace interacts playfully with male and female dogs in the care center. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Ace and other social, playful resident dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/14/2017 During his initial medical exam, Ace was tense with whale eye. ENERGY LEVEL: His owner describes Ace as having a high activity level which matches what we have seen in the center. Ace will require daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially in the behaviors noted below) Potential challenges: _X_House soiling: Ace is reported to have accidents in the home when he was not walked. He will need guidance and a consistent walk schedule to learn to properly eliminate outside. Accidents should never be punished as it can damage the human-animal dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse. _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control – Ace displays high energy and movement, but has also been fearful on leash while on walks outside the center. Ace may benefit from regularly scheduled walks on the same route to limit his exposure to new and unfamiliar environments. He may benefit from classes to learn leash manners as well as basic manners in regards to jumping up. Force free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Fearful: Though observed to be human-social, Ace may need time to warm up to the handler as he initially presents as a fearful dog, avoiding contact, shying away from direct touch. We recommend allowing Ace to interact at his own pace, force-free, rewarding based training is advised when introducing him to new/unfamiliar situations.
