Helga
Hello, my name is Helga. My animal id is #15176. I am a female fawn dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 01-Dec-2017.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Helga is at risk due to behavior, New Hope Only determination. She is fearful in the care center and will snap if she is uncomfortable with handling and attention. At this time there aren’t any medical concerns for Helga.

Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
Upon intake, Helga snapped at counselor when trying to check for microchip. She growled at counselor when trying to get close to her to collar. Did not handle.
Date of intake:: 12/1/2017
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray

Look:: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, body posture is stiff and fearful, tail is low and not moving. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity:: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, tail is between legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick.
Tag:: 5. Dog growls, snaps, or tries to bite.
Toy:: 1. No interest.
Summary:: Helga did not approach the assessor in the assessment room and moved away when the assessor approached her. She was tense during handling and snapped when touched during tag, so the rest of the handling portion of the assessment was not conducted.

Date of initial:: 12/2/2017
Summary:: Helga was growling in the cage but allowed handling once out of the cage.
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Helga so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, she displays a medium level of activity.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Helga is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Helga is fearful at the care center and snapped during her handling assessment. For this reason, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Helga is fearful at the care center and has snapped. It is important to always go slow and give Helga the option to walk away from any social interaction. Helga should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Helga’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Helga would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
