05/05/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Who doesn’t love watching a big puppy romp and play? That carefree spirit, the simple joy of tossing a toy and watching it fly, the bounce of (fake) grass beneath your paws, that swoosh his tail makes as it wags rhythmically. Rockson was the perfect end to my day, refreshing my spirit, and making me laugh with the simple joy of watching him play. He’s a gorgeous pup in his shiny orange and black brindle coat that gleams when the sun hits it. His eyes sparkle and laugh with a toy, a treat and a caress. His tail is on automatic pilot wagging constantly as he plays. He’s not just a handsome face, he’s on his way to some good training too. He may be housetrained, going potty as soon as we were out the door (but as a puppy he may need a refresher course), and he knows sit (although in his puppy enthusiasm he doesn’t hold it long). He takes treats like he does everything else, enthusiastically! Rockson came on my lap for a hug fest, but his energy and playfulness took hold and off he goes again tossing his toy into the air. He’s jumpy in his joy so will need some positive reminders that not everyone likes to be jumped on, and because he likes treats, and is smart, he’ll get it in no time. Young, energetic and lively puppies aren’t for everyone as they need training, love, structure and repeat, repeat, repeat. But, if you’re a puppy person, Rockson is ready to do for you forever what he did for me in 5 minutes…refresh your spirit and make you laugh. He’s worth it, and so are you.
05/05/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited 5/3/17 Unaltered Male, Owner Surrender (In previous home for one day) Previously lived with: Small dog, children Behavior toward children: Playful but very exuberant Behavior toward dogs: Playful Housetrained: While in Finder’s home overnight, Rockson used the bathroom outdoors. Energy level/descriptors: Rockson is described as friendly. SAFER ASSESSMENT: Date of assessment 5/5/2017 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, body is soft, open mouth panting, tail wagging, licks assessor’s hand. Tag: 2. Dog is distracted, not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Grabs leash at end of game, difficult to redirect. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog pulls back quickly. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy 1: 1. Dog playfully engages, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Rockson displayed high energy and movement throughout entire assessment, body remained loose and very wiggly but mouthed and shook objects in the room, bit and tore chair, easily redirected with treats. PLAYGROUP: 5/8: When introduced to another dog, Rockson solicits play by bowing and offering body bumps. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Rockson and other playful dogs, or dogs tolerant of energetic puppy play. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/3/17 During his initial medical exam, Rockson was active and difficult to restrain, snapped. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Rockson so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, Rockson displayed very high energy. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend food puzzled and long lasting treats.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially in behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5) – Due to Rockson’s size and strength, we feel he may be intimidating to young children. Older, dog savvy children should have an in depth interaction before pending adoption. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control – Rockson maintained high energy and movement throughout the room for the entire duration of the assessment. We recommend that default behaviors such as ‘leave it’, ‘sit/stay’, and ‘down’ are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition – Rockson has shown some mouthiness in the care center, at times mouthing rope and other human objects. This is a behavior that should be extinguised through training alternate behaviors. This is likely an attention seeking behavior but it should be replaced as it can frighten people. _X_Leash-biting/Leash pulling – Rockson has shown some leash biting behaviors while in the care center, coming out of kennel and at end of Tag item. Rockson should be walked with a Toy and taught trade up games. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which helps diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull or grab leash. _X_Destructive behavior – Rockson has shown destructive behavior in the care center, ripping chair cushion in assessment room, also grabbing objects and playfully shaking. We are unaware what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Rockson will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging durable chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Examples are Kongs and Nylabones.
