03/27/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited Profile 3/18/17 Spayed, Stray Bite history: Yes, owner woke up to bites the hand and palm. Severity of the bites are unknown. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/27/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Summary: Remy displayed no concerning behaviors on her assessment, she was social throughout. PLAYGROUP: 3/29: Remy is muzzled for interaction due to DOH hold status. When introduced off leash to the female helper dog, Remy corrects approach. She resumes by following, standing over the shoulders of the helper, and growling. Due to lack of history and observation in playgroup, the behavior department recommends allowing Remy to decompress in a single dog residence at this time. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/18/17 During her initial medical examination, Remy appeared tense and allowed minimal handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Remy so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Remy’s multiple bite history, she should be placed with a New Hope partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Remy to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Remy to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Remy presents with outside of the care centers.
Potential challenges: _X_Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression (Remy bit her owner twice while her owner was asleep, severity of these bites is not known. In the care center, Remy has not displayed any aggressive behaviors. As it is unknown what triggered these bites, or if these challenges will present in a future home, careful management and positive reinforcement, reward based training are recommended.) _X_Single pet home (Due to lack of dog-dog history and observation in playgroup, the behavior department recommends allowing Remy to decompress in a single dog residence at this time.)
