11/03/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
11/03/16 15:47 Kingsley, aka King, is a 2 year old male APBT mix. His family got him from a friend when he was 6 months old and had to surrender him due to housing conflict. King was timid with new people when his family got him. He lived with 2 adult women, an adult man, and a child from 2-4 years old. King was relaxed, tolerant, and played exuberantly with the child and adult man; he wasn’t affectionate with them. One adult woman never pet him and felt that he wouldn’t let her pet him if she tried. The other adult woman was his primary caretaker. He followed her everywhere and was affectionate with her. King barks at other dogs from far away outside. Up close, he sniffs and licks them. He lived with 2 cats and chased them playfully. He’s never bit anyone. Kingsley doesn’t mind storms. He doesn’t mind when someone takes his food/treat/toy, moves him off furniture, holds/restrains him, or wakes him up. He shivers at first during baths but soon relaxes. When guests visited his home, King was kept in a room away from them. Outside on walks, he would pull his owner on the leash to stay away from strangers. If someone outside his family tries to touch him, he growls at them. If they don’t leave, he barks at them while backing away. King’s family describes him as playful and medium energy. He’s an affectionate and loyal companion to his primary caretaker. He follows her everywhere. King plays chase and tug and plays with balls, bones, stuffed toys, and squeaky toys. He lived inside and slept cuddled with his owner. He ate dry Alpo food and his favorite treat is popcorn. He’s housetrained, potties on cement, and doesn’t have accidents. He’s well-behaved while left home alone free-roaming for 4-6 hours or less. If his owner leaves for a longer period of time, she keeps him in a pop-up crate, concerned that he would play with clothes or shoes, and he does well in the crate. He sits when asked. He went for walks at a moderate pace and usually didn’t pull on the leash (he sometimes pulled to avoid strangers). King was tense with wide eyes and a low body and tail. He sat under/between his owner’s legs and sometimes stood up and gently leaned into her lap, wagging his tail. He cowered as she moved him around and scanned him (-) but maintained a soft body while she collared him. After his family left, King whined and barked towards the door. He was tense and low-bodied as he walked around the shelter with me.

11/06/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Intact, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults/children/cats (ages 2-4) Behavior toward children: Relaxed/tolerant/exuberant; was not affectionate Behavior toward dogs: Barks at passing dogs Behavior toward cats:Playful FG/RG: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Kingsley’s family describes him as playful and medium energy. He’s an affectionate and loyal companion to his primary caretaker. Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/03/16 Kingsley has displayed defensive behavior during his stay at our care centers which have been becoming increasingly more difficult to manage. Kingsley has been observed to growl/lunge upon approach and tolerates very minimal handling; for this reason, Kingsley is not an appropriate candidate for a SAFER assessment at this time. PLAYGROUP: 11/4: Kingsley is fearful in the yard, keeping a distance from handlers and maintaining a stiff body with ears back and whale-eye. He briefly sniffs another male (through a barrier) but quickly moves away. Kingsley is not tolerant of handling at this time, however, so he is unable to be introduced to any dogs off-leash. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 10/04/16 During his initial medical examination, Kingsley appeared tense, growling throughout exam; minimal handling was tolerated. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13)(See potential challenges) _X_Place with a New Hope partner (Kingsley has attempted to snap multiple times during his stay at our care centers, for this reason, we believe Kingsley would benefit best from placement with a New Hope rescue group who can further assess this behavior in a stable environment.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Kingsley has displayed fearful/defensive behavior during his stay at our care centers, tolerating very minimal handling; any form of direct touch may result in a fearful bite. It is recommended that Kingsley be allowed a proper time to decompress to aid in acclimating him to a new environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Kingsley to new and unfamiliar situations.)
