A Little Bit About Me…
A volunteer writes: Did you hear us sing? “Once in love with Scrappy, always in love with Scrappy, for ever and ever fa la la…” What an amazing dog this little chappy is! Quiet in his kennel, his magnetic eyes capturing mine stop me dead in my tracks. Easily leashed, we head out the door, where going potty is Scrappy’s first priority. He’s great on leash, accustomed to be crated, enjoyed being with his person in his home, and is relaxed with children. Scrappy LOVES treats, sits without being asked, takes them gently and will sniff out the smallest crumb! He shakes paw, and LOVES people, and has a job as a corporate greeter dog when corporate groups visit the shelter. He loves that job, he gets pet, attention and more treats! He’s an outstanding breed ambassador! A total snuggle boy, he never stops wagging his tail which wags his butt, resulting in the cutest wiggle butt ever! I’d never guess that this charmer is 9 years old, as he has the spirit and liveliness of a much younger dog, with all the gentleness of an older one. We should all age as gracefully as Mr. Scrappy! In playgroups with females, he’s been social and attempts to solicit play, and my favorite comment is that he “flirts on his tiptoes”. This senior still loves the ladies! As a fellow volunteer notes: “He is really so sweet my heart swells just thinking about him”. I couldn’t agree more. Someone is going to be so lucky, shouldn’t it be you?
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Behavior Asilomar/TM – Treatable-Manageable
Potential challenges:
On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments: On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the previous home and care center Scrappy has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them and barking. As Scrappy plays well with other dogs, this reaction is likely due to excitement and frustration, we recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. He will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs.
JAN 24, 2018 assessment:
Summary:Scrappy came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, he was friendly and social towards the handlers.
Summary:
*PLAY GROUP GREETER DOG*
During Scrappy’s initial stay in the Brooklyn Care Center, Scrappy previously displayed more intent on mounting female dogs, as well as some interest in chase play. While currently housed in the Manhattan Care Center, Scrappy has offered polite greeting to male and female dogs, and has engaged in gentle play with other playful dogs. He has not made frequent attempts to mount other dogs. At this time, slow introductions are recommended between Scrappy and other dogs who are tolerant, respectful, or gently playful. The previous owner of Scrappy does report on-leash reactivity, though history off leash or in-home has not been reported.
Summary (1):

A Little Bit About Me…
A volunteer writes: Scrappy might not be as young as the famed Scrappy Doo, but this guy harbors an unbridled love for people AND the wiggle of a pup! His former owner tells us he is friendly with strangers and gentle with children, but reactive towards other dogs. He is reported to be fully housebroken (he seems it), accustomed to being crated, and to enjoy following his people around the house. Despite such a big life change (he was with his family since he was a puppy), Scrappy has taken it all in stride and has been a little ray of sunshine whenever I’ve hung out with him. He is SUPER treat motivated (and could sniff out the smallest crumb!), loves to play fetch, and most of all, is incredibly affectionate. Any chance he gets he’ll prop his paws on me, smear himself into my lap, or give kisses. And really, talking to him is all it takes to unleash that impossibly endearing wiggle! He is really so sweet my heart swells just thinking about him…please come him see for yourself at Brooklyn ACC.

[Spay/Neuter Waiver – Age] It is the policy of ACC not to perform surgery on any animal over the age of 8-10 years due to the higher risks incurred in a shelter setting. The veterinarian is hereby issuing a permanent spay/neuter waiver, from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY due to the estimated age of this animal. ACC does recommend you consult with your veterinarian to determine if surgical sterilization is appropriate.
