Nino

Hello, my name is Nino. My animal id is #10870. I am a male brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 26-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour – aggressive towards people.

Nino is at risk due to behavior (New Hope Only determination). he has a multiple bite history and should go to someone prepared to manage and modify this behavior. Currently Nino has Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease complex which is contagious to other dogs. He will likely need in home care with a course of antibiotics.

Basic Information:: Nino is a two year old medium breed dog that the owner has had since he was a puppy. The owner is surrendering due to Nino’s aggressive behavior escalating.

Previously lived with:: Multiple adults and a child

How is this dog around strangers?: Nino is aggressive around strangers, he barks and growls at them.

How is this dog around children?: Nino has been kept away from the child in the home due to escalation of aggression.

Housetrained:: Yes

Energy level/descriptors:: medium

For a New Family to Know: Nino is described as fearful. Nino’s favorite thing to do is go out on walks. When the owner is home, Nino follows him around. Nino likes to play with ball toys. Nino has his own room where he sleeps. Nino is fed any variety of wet food, three times a day. Nino uses the cement when taken out. On a leash, Nino pulls very hard.

Date of initial:: 10/26/2017

Summary:: Nino lunged and growled.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Nino’s previous owner described him as having a medium level of activity.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY

Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to Nino’s multiple severe bite history, we recommend an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Nino’s multiple bite history, we recommend placement with a New Hope Partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Nino is reported to growl and snap if his food bowl is touched or if toys or treats are taken from him. For this reason we advise against ever removing items from Nino’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression: Nino has a multiple-bite history, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. Nino needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Nino as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression.

    Oh Nino..I wish I new your story.. It’s obvious this boy was never properly trained, and socialized, however he is friendly with the cat.. He doesn’t mind being bathed brushed or his nails trimmed..He doesn’t mind being retrained, pushed off the couch..He will follow the owner around the home..Nino loves his toys, and going for walks..Dino does guard, and he has a bite history.. What I don’t understand is if you look at his moving pictures above there is a stranger touching his mouth..They might have been giving him a treat..So how vicious could this boy be..During his medical if you read his notes on the bottom when they were treating him for kennel cough, vet said Nino was friendly but anxious..Unless we can see for ourselves how this dog reacts to people I cannot judge this dog.. However, Dino is going to need an Angel to save his life there is no doubt..I believe Nino is the way he is because owner didn’t know how to train him, and he was afraid to have him around people, and maybe Dino thought they were bad ..We can speculate, but in a nut shell this boy is in big trouble, and the chances of him being adopted is slim, unless this boy gets his miracle, he will be killed today..If there is someone out there with a big heart, and training experience looking to take on Dino, and prove everyone wrong..Please come forward and save this boys life..I know there is a good dog in Dino.. If you want to adopt or foster to save Nino’s life you must act now, and contact a NH Rescue to pull Nino..Contact Help Desk for more information..Save Dino’ s life today.

    “Nino is a two year old medium breed dog” haha Medium breed. That’s a new one. Nino needs a little training. Wow. Most PEOPLE could use a little training. Are we supposed to give up on dogs because they are not perfect? Can’t one of these 300 rescues take him and get him somewhere for a little more socialization than what his previous owner gave him (not much)? This little guy loves toys, walks, being brushed…I mean, he sounds like he is a sweet one. I bet the people this dog didn’t like were probably not likeable people. Who knows what kind of neighborhood he lived in and what was going on there.

    Nino got along well with the cat….were They locked in a room together? With only each other for company? It states above Nino liked the Cat!! If they weren’t locked away then how we’re they kept away from THE CHILD? States this above Nino kept away from CHILD. Lived with a number of ADULTS? Did anyone assume responsibility for this boy? It’s hard to determine who is the biggest idiot here!!! The ADULTS beg for EU. I wonder if the Cat’s living a life of Hell? Did anyone notice the marking on his chest? Puts me in mind of Mickey Mouses hand. He was special!! I’m not surprised you murdered him, the surprise would have been if he lived!!!!!!! In the future, when we leave this life, I believe that those we’ve harmed we pay for! Life for a life, pain for pain, etc. GOD won’t listen to excuses, why? Cause there aren’t any? Nino, I will never forget you little Buddy! Many of us loved you!!! Run and play in open fields where you’ll be loved forever!
