Midnight

Hello, my name is Midnight. My animal id is #17625. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 04-Jan-2018.

Midnight is at risk for behavioral reasons. Midnight has been very fearful in the shelter. He has been difficult to handle and displays potential for defensive aggression. Medically, we have no concerns for Midnight, who appears to be a healthy dog.

My medical notes are…

Weight: 65.5 lbs

  • L V T Notes
  • Vet Notes

7/01/2018

DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: Approx 3-6 years based on overall appearance and secondary sex characteristics Microchip noted on Intake? Negative on LVT intake History : Stray, no medical hx available Subjective: Alert Observed Behavior – Growling and barking through the kennel door Objective BAR, BCS 5-6/9, MMs pink EENT: Eyes clear, no ocular discharge noted. Mild occasional serous nasal discharge. Did not look in ears. Oral Exam: Did not perform. PLN: Not palpated H/L: Eupnic, not ausculted ABD: Not palpated U/G: Male intact MSI: Ambulatory x 4, no masses noted CNS: Mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Rectal: Not performed Assessment: Apparently healthy though limited exam Prognosis: Good Plan: Neuter SURGERY: Okay for surgery 1088

Details on my behavior are…

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange

  • Behavior History
  • Behavior Assessment

How is this dog around strangers?: Dog at the time of intake was very scared. He was growling and barking.

Date of intake:: 1/4/2018

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray

Date of assessment:: 1/7/2018

Summary:: Midnight is difficult to remove from the kennel, lunging, growling, and snapping at people who approach him. He has allowed minimal handling from his caretakers. Out of concern for his stress levels and due to safety concerns, we feel Midnight is not a good candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Date of intake:: 1/4/2018

Summary:: Midnight was growling and snarling.

Date of initial:: 1/4/2018

Summary:: Midnight was tense and growling.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Midnight so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY

Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Midnight is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Midnight has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Midnight has displayed a potential for defensive aggression at the care center, growling and snapping at handlers. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Midnight to new and unfamiliar situations.

      Good question. These dogs need emotional support from an experienced person… not the staff at acc. Shameful.

    You know his owner is looing for him, no stray wears a harness, he looks healthy and can’t understand how he got dumped there, lethis family find him, what is wrong with you so called care takers, if your dog broke loose and got lost you would expect a 501 c3 non profit shelter abide by state laws 7 days for a owner to find their animal

      Some of these dogs that come in as “strays” are really owner-surrender but the owner does NOT want to pay the surrender fee. Ultra POS owner

      The state law has loopholes — any municipality can have its own redemption period (i.e. Stray hold) as long as it is a minimum of 3 days. So not really an effective law.

    ‘After midnight, we’re gonna shake your tambourine.
    After midnight, it’s all gonna be peaches and cream’
    (Eric Clapton)

    Midnight will shake his tamborine and life will be peaches and cream for him once he escapes into a foster or his owners catch wind of his presence here.

    Midnight is a glossy deep black adult pup (3 -6 y/o). In his solitary picture taken at intake, handsome dark!-eyed Midnight looks unhappy and scared.

    Save Midnight. FOSTER Midnight at no cost to you. Fostering is short term. Plus that, Midnight is healthy as a horse thus far, which translate into less cost output for rescues.

    Midnight once belonged to someone…he wants to belong to someone once again…

    BE THAT SOMEONE!
    FOSTER MIDNIGHT

    Adopt or foster Handsome Midnight. Don’t let this bright kight be eclipsed by his death at the hands of ACC’s own Cruella de Vilke, Risa Weinstein.

    ACC IS ASSUMING HE WAS DUMPED NOT LOST. 3 DAYS IS NOT LONG ENOUGH TO GIVE AN OWNER TIME TO FIND THEIR DOG AT KILL SHELTER. FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, THERE WERE SEVERAL THAT OWNERS FOUND TO LATE… ACC JUST SAYS… OOPS, WE KILLED YOUR DOG. ACC YOUR POLICIES AND PRACTICES ARE SHAMEFUL. THESE DOGS ARE SIMPLY SCARED AND CONFUSED BECAUSE THEY HAD A BOND WITH THEIR OWNERS, WHETHER OWNERS WERE GOOD OR BAD. YOU NEED TO HAVE A TRAINED PERSON TO HELP CALM A SCARED AND CONFUSED DOG… A NEEDLE IS NOT THE ANSWER. IF I WERE IN NEW YORK, I’D BE MARCHING IN THE MAYOR’S OFFICE. JUST SHAMEFUL.

        Janet, do not know details. The facebook post said there was a foster. It takes time to fill apps and it may have been someone who saw or decided too late to complete app. 18 hours not enough time.

      There was a person who made a fb “I will foster” post. That is no indication of a real foster. Did the person apply to a NH rescue? Did the person apply and get rejected — happens if someone is too far away or lives in no pet housing? A fb offer to foster means little unless an application is made.

    I read several years ago an article by an ex vet tech about the cruelty during euthanasia for NYC dogs. At that time the heartstick method was used and may very well be used still. I thought pheno barbital was used,
    ” Best Answer:  Intracardial injections, commonly know as heart sticks, is a rather inhumane way to euthanize an animal that is not comatose(or nearly comatose) or heavily sedated. A needle and syringe containing sodium pentobarbital is passed through the chest wall and severely layers of muscle into the heart. However on an animal that isn’t sedated or comatose this is hard to do because the body is in constant motion. It’s not uncommon for the person administering the injection to miss and accidentally punctures the lungs and causes them to fill up with fluid. This is a VERY painful way to die.
    In a shelter there is no reason for this to be done on an otherwise healthy dog. In a clinic however, it is often needed for dogs that need to be euthanized but have circulatory problems”
    Hopefully, this is not currently used.

    I think so for Acc fostered dogs unless they are adopted during fostering. The rescues board the dogs that are not adopted during fostering, i do not know how long the time the fostering contracts are.
