Johnny Cash

**NOT AT SHELTER – TEMPORARILY IN ACC FOSTER** FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT: [email protected]**

***A private donor has graciously offered $500 to the New Hope Partner that pulls Johnny Cash***

Hello, my name is Johnny Cash. My animal id is #17537. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 02-Jan-2018.

Johnny Cash is at risk due to being diagnosed with Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex, which is contagious to other dogs. He also has a heart murmur and came to the care center with ear infections. There are no behavior concerns for hism at this time, average determination.

Let’s get to know each other a bit more…

A volunteer writes: We have our very own ‘Man in Black’ at the Manhattan Care Center. While he’s not much for singing, this handsome hunk speaks volumes with his soulful eyes and affectionate ways. Johnny’s a true people dog and (quite literally) not one to take kennel life lying down, so you’ll usually find him right up front and ready to go. I’ve even caught him smooshed against the door, luxuriating in a side massage from a passing admirer! Easily leashed and ready to follow wherever it is you’re heading, Johnny walks the line like a gentleman, taking his time sniffing all around and greeting other pups of every size with friendly good manners, even the not-so-friendly little ones! He enjoys treats and mouths them gently from my hand, plays nicely with toys and excels at exploring and snuggling–talents that he clearly mastered long ago. Johnny’s Care Center fan club is growing by the day, and he rocked his behavior assessment, too, but what this wandering soul truly longs for is a family to love and a place to call his own. Open your heart today, Johnny Cash is ready to come home.

A Foster Writes: Johnny is one of the sweetest dogs we’ve ever met! He’s really loyal, but also kind to strangers and always happy to meet new people. We found that he loves following us around the house, and always wants to be with you, but given a good chew toy or bone he can occupy himself for hours. He doesn’t seem to mind being home alone for longer periods, and he always greets us when we come home with excitement and affection. Though he never barked when we were with him (even on walks outside) or when he’s with other people, we found that in the first couple of days before he was acclimated he barked during the day, or occasionally howled when he thought nobody was coming back. After the first week my neighbors informed me that he had stopped making noise throughout the day and was being a good boy! Johnny knows ‘stay’, ‘no’, and in the small time that we fostered him he even learned how to ‘sit’; he seems to be a really intelligent boy! He’s really calm and well behaved in public, and would even sit down inside coffee shops when we were at the counter ordering. He had only one pee and one poo accident in the apt in the first handful of days, but we think that was due to the anxiety of a new place and moving environments. We would give him food in the morning, but he seemed to self-regulate his eating so that he would only eat when he knew he could go to the bathroom soon after. Often times we’d come home at the end of the day and he hadn’t eaten much of his food, but then would immediately eat all of it and want to go for a walk. He loves physical play, and often times we’d tackle and roll around on the floor with him, but he never became mean or aggressive, and certainly never hurt us in any way. He’s a very curious boy, and is distracted, almost hypnotized, when on the street for a walk. He does love a good run around the park, and can seemingly run forever. He loves smelling almost everything outside which, although is very cute, we found we needed to watch closely. On a couple occasions he found something on the street and snatched it up in his mouth, but we quickly became comfortable and trusting enough with Johnny that we would open his mouth and he would let us take it out with our fingers. Johnny is pretty much the perfect dog in every way. At least twice every walk a stranger would comment on how beautiful he is (he’s really a knockout), and he definitely doesn’t mind the attention. He’s a lovely energy to have in the home, and we don’t doubt that he will make someone the happiest parent one day.

My medical notes are…

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Johnny Cash so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: AVERAGE (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience)

Johnny Cash, I have to admit is soneone whose talents I most admire. He’s a mature guy, a perfectly nifty four years old! He excels at all he puts his energy into…ACED his safer tests for starters…he has winning ways as attestex by the medical staff “Observed Behavior -playful, seeks petting “, by the safer assessor ” Summary:: Johnny Cash approached the assessor in the assessment room quickly and with a soft body. He was a bit distracted at times, sniffing around the room, but was social at other times. He allowed all handling and displayed no concerning behavior.”

Johnny Cash is friendly withe ladies “Summary:: The behavior department feels that Johnny Cash may be most compatible with female dogs who are playful and tolerant. He has been observed to attempt to mount when introduced to female dogs in the care center, though has displayed the potential to engage in play when offered. Johnny also is a guy who knows what he likes…”He enjoys treats and mouths them gently from my hand, plays nicely with toys and excels at exploring and snuggling–talents that he clearly mastered long ago.”, always an admirable quality!

Top that off a glossy black well maintained coat, clear brown eyes, cutest ears, muscular jaws, and a Woo! Woo! Woo! Knockout smile!

Yeee-up! Johnny Cash can put his food dish on my floor anytime…! But, alas, Johnny Cash says he is not a west coaster! No beach bunny is he…just an easterner looking for a nice diggy home with family that appreciate his many fine qualities and are commited to doing the best for their canine member!

There are always people who prefer to turn a blind eye, but there is never a need to listen to them. This attitude only benefits the one with their head in the sand. Please save Johnny Cash..This is is second time on the Kill List, and ACC may not be this generous again..If you cannot commit long term, foster him at no cost to you..A rescue can pull a dog to safety, and pay for their care, but only if there is a foster home in place..They do not house the dogs.. they work out of their homes..Fostering is only temporary,,It gives the rescue time to find the dog a forever home..time they will no longer get from ACC..So please this is a great dog..It’s up to you if Johnny Cash lives another day….Contact Help Desk on Rescues who offer free fostering..Not all do..

Johnny Cash is a sweet 4 year old ‘man in black’. Johnny has been diagnosed with a heart murmur, and lived to one month past her 16th birthday. Tara’s murmur was mild. The details of Johnny Cash’s I am not aware, but severe or mild, Johnny Cash is just as much a right to live out his life naturally not have it abrupted end by decision of the death committee (and, yes, AC has a death committee who decides who lives and who dies).

Heart murmur or not, Johnny Cash enjoys life to the fullest, making friends of the two and four-legged variety, for who can resist this charming gentleman who also aced his behavior tests…

☆☆ “Johnny walks the line like a gentleman, taking his time sniffing all around and greeting other pups of every size with friendly good manners, even the not-so-friendly little ones!

He enjoys treats and mouths them gently from my hand, plays nicely with toys and excels at exploring and snuggling–talents that he clearly mastered long ago.

Johnny’s Care Center fan club is growing by the day, and he rocked his behavior assessment, too,

but what this wandering soul truly longs for is a family to love and a place to call his own.

Open your heart today, Johnny Cash is ready to come home.” ☆☆

Let it be your home. Foster or adopt Johnny Cash!

I think finally I got understanding why he is overlooked by rescue groups – after reading his entire page: he has a waver from ACC for neutering. Rescue groups canNOT have a dog who is not neutered! I wonder whether this kind of waver is that ACC would not request a dog to be neutered, or it is that a dog is not allowed to be neutered. I understand that surgery can be life threatening in Johnny’s case, but at least he will have a chance to survive. But if nobody pulls him out, then he has no chance to survive: it is 100 % death sentence.

    • Dog mom says

      January 20, 2018 at 12:41

He is in a catch 22 situation. My heart murmer pup had surgery to remove and biopsy a mass. She was 14 years old, and had a staff canine cardiologist in the operating theater monitoring her. She did have irregular heartbeat, but survived the procedure and lived two more years…cardiac arrest.

Perhaps a call to one of the rescues can clarify this situation.

Johnny Cash is a great dog, to add to ones family..Wonderful personality..Loves people, gets along with other dogs ..Johnny Cash does have a heart murmur and ear infection..BTW ACC Way to go knowing this dog has medical issues infecting him with your kennel cough..IDIOTS!!!..As you can see in Johnny’s video..his heart murmur does not infect him in the least, while he is frolicking around with the other dog…..This is his second time on the kill list..He may have run out of chances, so Please adopt him..If you cannot commit long term, or would like to give Johnny a try before commiting, foster him at no cost to you, and you saved his life..A rescue can pull a dog to safety and pay for their care but they depend on the kindness of foster parents to temporarily take these dogs in temporarily, to give them time to find them a forever home..time they won’t get from ACC..So if Johnny lives or dies depends on you..So please open your heart to Johnny Cash and save his life..Don’t let ACC take it from him..Contact Help Desk on Rescues who offer free fostering..

Johnny Cash is an excellent candidate for a family dog. He absolutely needs a home to continue living. Please foster this wonderful guy!

Having a dog with a heart murmur it did not slow her down one bit. She lived to a ripe old age with no special care unless in surgery. She wss like Johnny Cash. Save a life and enrich your own!
