06/25/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile 6/23/17 Unaltered Male, Owner Surrender (In previous home for a few years) Previously lived with: Adults, children (ages eight-sixteen), and another small dog Behavior toward strangers: Shy Behavior toward children: Good with them Behavior toward dogs: Tolerant and relaxed Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: Chulo will bark if his food bowl is touched while he is eating Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Other notes: Chulo will growl if disturbed while he is sleeping SAFER ASSESSMENT: 6/25/17 Look: 5. Dog growls and snaps. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Chulo appeared fearful in the assessment room, avoiding the assessor. During look, he growled and snapped, so the rest of the handling items were omitted. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 6/24: When introduced off leash to other dogs, Chulo will greet politely and wander the pen. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Chulo barked and snapped at the counselor. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/24/17 During his initial medical exam, Chulo was snapping. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Upon approach, Chulo retreats to the back of his kennel. Upon leashing attempt, he growls and snaps at the leash. When coaxed to the front of his kennel, he slowly moves forward towards the door then allows the handler to carry him out with a slow approach. He is successfully leashed once in the handler’s arms. ENERGY LEVEL: Chulo appears to have a medium level of activity at the care center.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Chulo is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Chulo has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: Chulo’s previous owner notes that he may bark when his food bowl is approached. We recommend that Chulo be left along while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Chulo’s mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Chulo is fearful at the care center and has growled and snapped. It is important to always go slow and give Chulo the option to walk away from any social interaction. Chulo should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Chulo’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Chulo would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
