Chestnut was brought into the shelter as a stray. There is no information on his past behaviors. It was reported during intake Chestnut was relaxed and allowed handling. During SAFER Chestnut came into the assessment room, loose and friendly when interacting with the assessor, he allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Chestnut was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resource portion of the assessment. Chestnut was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Chestnut appears to be sociable, and did not display any behavior concerns, so the department feels he can be suitable for an “Average” adopter. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Dog-Dog-Chestnut displays soft body language as he wanders in a group of males and females.

Chestnut was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Chestnut is a bit nervous as he wanders in a group of males and females. He is tolerant of puppy play solicitations and may engage in gentle play. Chestnut seeks handler attention while in group play. 6/21: Chestnut is nervous as he wanders in a group of other puppies. He is tolerant of their play solicitations. 6/22: Chestnut displays soft body language as he wanders in a group of males and females. 6/24: Chestnut greets the other dog with a soft body but spends most of his time seeking handler interaction. 6/25- 6/26: Chestnut solicits gentle play in a group. 6/27: Chestnut has become to be more energetic, bordering on high energy. This may be a result of being in the shelter environment. When he approaches the gate he jumps up on it, and barks at the other dog incessantly. He also has become pushy with the handlers when he wants attention– jumping and barking at them. 6/29: Chestnut wanders in the pen, displaying soft and bouncy body language, in a group of males and females.
