Brooklyn Center
My name is HUCK. My Animal ID # is A1080261.
I am a neutered male black and white am pit bull ter mix. The shelter thinks I am about 2 YEARS
I came in the shelter as a STRAY on 04/16/2017 from NY 11207, owner surrender reason stated was STRAY.
07/06/2017 AT RISK MEMO
Huck A1080261 is at-risk as New Hope Only due to severe dog reactivity. While Huck remains social with human handlers, he is highly dog reactive and unable to readily settle/refocus in the presence of other dogs despite our best enrichment/training efforts (barking, lunging, fixating, growling); known history of biting another dog was reported. Huck is unable to successfully thrive in a kennel environment as he remains highly anxious when passing other dogs.

02/06/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Huck was the last dog I walked today–and I walked by his cage so many times while he waited patiently, I was amazed he didn’t bark at me once! Just patiently waited, and happily wagged his tail all over the place when he realized it was finally his turn. Huck is an energetic young man who can sit for treats (and take them very gently), seems housetrained, and loves people. His coloring and shape make me think he’s a boxer mix, and that typical boxer love for people is undeniable. Although Huck isn’t a big fan of other dogs, his snuggle quotient with people is very high. š This guy loves attention and can’t wait to find his special person! Please come and seem him at the Brooklyn ACC today. Another volunteer writes: I am a cat companion, but I can’t resist talking to the dogs, too. There is something about Huck. I read his kennel card out loud and said, “Huck, this says you can sit and give paw” and he proceeded to sit down and stretch out his paw to me! He really listens. Huck is very smart and also good looking. He may be a bit of a lone wolf where other dogs are concerned, but he is very responsive to people.
07/06/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Neutered, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward children: Has never lived with children but on walks will allow children to approach/pet Behavior toward dogs: Owner reports does not get along with dogs and is reactive on leash; growling, snapping, barking. Behavior toward cats: Unknown FG/RG: None reported Bite history: Reported to have bitten another dog; no further details. Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Owner described him as affectionate, excitable, and anxious; activity level is very high. Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/8/16 Look: 1. Dogās eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessorās cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft āpoppingā of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1.No interest. Summary: No concerns were seen during this assessment, Huck was social throughout. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Dog Reactive: These dogs need help managing their dog reactivity and should not be allowed off-leash around other dogs until they are provided extensive and supervised socialization with a professional behaviorist or trainer utilizing positive reinforcement behavior modification techniques. PLAYGROUP: Huck has displayed concerning behavior off leash with other dogs, as well as in passing in the yard. He has required a muzzle when interacting off leash, and remains tense when approached. When dogs pass by in the yard, he stiffens, growls, hard barks, and lunges in their direction. The behavior team feels that it would be in Huck’s best interest to remain the only dog in the home, and exercise vigilance and caution when handling Bruce in areas where other dogs may be present. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 04/16/17 During his initial medical examination, Huck tolerated all handling without issue.
ENERGY LEVEL: Huck displays a high activity level in the care center in addition to what has been seen in his previous home. He is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Single-pet home: See Known History and Playgroup sections _X_Recommend no dog parks: See Known History and Playgroup sections _X_Place with New Hope Partner: Due to the severity of Huck’s reactivity to dogs in addition to known history of biting another dog, we believe that Huck poses a safety risk in future homes. We believe the behavior management and modification needed to set Huck up to be a successful family pet and to raise his quality of life to an acceptable level is beyond the scope of what we can expect our public adopters to provide. Potential challenges: _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Huck is has been observed to be reactive on leash in previous homes as well in shelter; lunging, barking, fixating and snapping towards other dogs. Huck will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs, we recommend a front clip harness or head halter. Appropriate and safe management is highly recommended when in the presence of other dogs.

When in a pen with a dog that is about ten feet away from him, Huck hard stares at the other dog. The handler is unable to break his focus and he does not accept treats. 11/17: It is reported Huck accepts treats when he is in the building but immediately becomes distracted when he sees the helper dog, ten feet away. Due to this behavior, we did not continue with a counter-conditioning session. 11/18: Huck was allowed into the pens with no other dogs around to see if he would accept treats. He only begins to take treats after five minutes of exploring the pen and even then only takes a couple before spitting them back out.

Who really decides which dogs die, is there a shelter manager that picks or Weinstock? There has to be some type of system to this chaos.
ginny says
Weinstock has nothing to do with it. The lists are put together by the medical staff, behavioral staff and animal care personnel. The list is discussed with the shelter manager and decisions are made as to who will make the actual list, based on what everyone has to say.
Amy Capshaw says
Do you work there?
ttbennett says
heartbroken. rest in peace handsome boy.
Underdog says
Dear Cathy, you do so much for the dogs day in and Day out! You are an amazing advocate, tracker of the pledges, updater I just wanted to tell you how sorry I was about Huck I can see he really was very special to you. It was a horrible decision on the Brooklyn Mangers Part, there was a solution. They could have begged a New Hope Group to take Huck as A Only Dog For One Of Their Fosters. Iam so sorry he was not Saved it is unforgivable On Their Part!
Janet Schmid-Cararo says
My God it”s a blood bath. They’ve killed so many in just a couple of days..Huck had so many pledges, and it wasn’t enough to rescue..They need Fosters..Fosters are more important than pledges. Rest in peace Huck, and all your little friends too..You weren’t alone when those monsters killed you…You were in our hearts.
Amy Capshaw says
Oh god no. My heart just sank to the floor seeing this. I am so sick to death of seeing how many wonderful dogs are killed day after day. The no kill list on Saturday night is a cruel joke. This place of death just makes up for it but loading up the other lists with more dogs than anyone can possibly hope to save. Aw, sweet Huck. Run with the rest of your friends and be free. Fly high, sweetheart. We love you and you won’t be forgotten.
Underdog says
My heart too Buck we lost you after being so careful to Save Razor Mighty , Cora, Rocky twice Seymoor. Impossible to belive that Brooklyn staff would have ordered Hucks killing after living with him everyday for three months. What kind of people are the staff in Brooklyn to have betrayed Buck by killing him. They could have put in a plead to all the New Hope Rescue ! Anything but what they chose!
ginny says
He was rescue only, so the NH rescues knew about him. Even before the past few days, they’ve known about him.
Reina says
No compassion, I started following this sight because of this dog and I’ve followed him and his peers. Seymour and Cora and the others that have been saved and it hurts that that they didn’t take his past history into consideration. He was just a number and disposed like just a number, without considering his hardship and his fans that were rallying for him. Tonight I’m ashamed to be a New Yorker.
Reina says
FUCK YOU BROOKLYN,YOU SUCK
M Curry says
I just don’t see how the vitriol on some of these posts helps the dogs. I volunteer in Brooklyn walking them, and walked Huck nearly weekly for close to a year since he first came to Brooklyn last year. I and many of the other staff there truly loved him and were upset when he was returned at least twice after being adopted (the last time found tied to a pole outdoors!). The shelter tried hard for a year to find him a home, but he had bad luck, as well as being extremely dog-reactive. Not even the rescues seemed to want the liability of adopting him out, as he could be nearly unmanageable around other dogs – I knew this from walking him, and always had a knot in my stomach and exercised extra, extra vigilance when I did. He would sallivate, growl and nearly pull me into the street trying to go after another dog, and I would not have had him around my own dogs at home. It’s a punch in the gut for me that he was put down, but I am sure the decision was a wrenching one. No one that I have met at the shelter rejoices when any dog euthanized – quite the opposite – and Huck had many there who cared about him. It could not have been easy to keep him there for so long, but they did try and took great pains to manage him around the other dogs.
Nadia says
As I do not live in the United States, it is not normal for me that dogs are killed in animal shelters. We have got a law against the killing of animals in shelters and exceptions are only made if they have got incurable diseases (= pain for the animal) or if they are aggressive (and training does not help) which would make them a danger for people.
Reina says
I don’t see how comments could make this dog’s fate any worse
Robin says
So sorry sweet Huck. An adorable dog that had been returned. He certainly deserved his life and not to be killed. NY ACC is the worst place for any pet. Too many pets killed for no reason except that they can. Heart breaking that this barbaric killing just goes on and on. RIP Angel. You deserved better.
Jocassa12 says
I truly hope Huck’s sweet face and awesome videos haunt whoever was involved in his death forever. ? Huck was a great dog with lots of people rooting for him. He did not deserve this ending. I pray New Yorkers stand up and demand change!!!!!! It’s going to end unless the NY politicians change. Please continue to fight for a No-Kill shelter.
Huck was an outstanding dog! Heaven has a new angel and his name is Huck! Run free good boy! You were so loved by so many. And will never be forgotten. ??
